My .ai file says it can't be opened.+
It was saved without “Create PDF Compatible File”. Re-save it from Illustrator with that option on (it's the default) and try again.
Are the vectors kept?+
Yes, when converting to PDF. PNG and JPG are pixel images — choose 300 or 600 DPI for print.
